A report released late last year has revealed that people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex or queer (LGBTIQ) experience intimate partner violence at similar rates as those who identify as heterosexual.
Monica Campo and Sarah Tayton had released a report on behalf of 'Child Family Community Australia' highlighting the challenges associated with domestic violence in an LGBTIQ relationship.
The report had revealed that there has been an invisibility of domestic violence issues in LGBTIQ relationships in policy and practice responses in Australia, and a lack of acknowledgment that domestic violence even exists within these communities.
Further identified was the lack of awareness amongst service providers of intimate partner violence in the LGBTIQ population and lack understanding and experience in addressing issues within this community.
These barriers and misconceptions are at the core of our work at Safe Love. The more we educate and move towards helping others realise that these issues exist, the greater chance we can get this issue on the agenda. Subsequently, we will move one step closer to getting funding for programs to address domestic violence in the LGBTIQA community!
